New Heart church exists because God loves East Grand Rapids. From the beginning, New Heart has aspired to follow the example of Jesus and the early church as it is described in Acts, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42) This chapter goes on the state that the result of the church’s focus on these things were glad and sincere hearts, praise to the Lord, the favor of many people, and the Lord adding daily to the number of those who were saved. We have committed to follow the early church’s example because we long for glad and sincere hearts full of praise to our Lord and Savior, and the salvation of many lost souls.
Teaching of the Word of God: We focus on the teaching of the Word of God through Scripture based teaching on Sunday mornings by Pastor Adam Anderson. We also have several weekly small groups that provide Scripture based teachings, some which are specific to certain ages or phases of life. Pastor Adam and leaders within New Heart regularly engage in individual discipleship; teaching and mentoring New Heart members in the truth of God’s Word.
Fellowship: New Heart members engage in fellowship by intentionally ‘doing life’ together, which includes bearing each another’s burdens and joys (Gal. 6:2, Rom. 15:13). Another way in which we promote fellowship is to schedule various fellowship events throughout the year including BBQ’s in the summer, meals after church on Sunday, and retreats. Finally, we do our best to facilitate fellowship following our worship services by offering coffee, snacks, and a warm atmosphere.
Breaking of Bread: One of the greatest blessings of being a small church is the opportunity to regularly break bread with one another in our homes. God has blessed us with fellow believers that have the gift of hospitality, through which we are able to gather in one another’s homes and share a meal. Through these meals, we experience the communion and unity found within the body of Christ (the Church) and we remember the sacrifice He made to unify us with Him and one another.
Prayer: In our young life as a church, God has clearly taught us that the most important thing we can do is to lift everything to Him in prayer – both individually and corporately. We have a weekly prayer meeting on Monday nights where we pray for our church, our community, and one another. There is also a group that covers every worship service in prayer. Additionally, many in our church have been walking prayer circles around our city even before New Heart began. All of this has resulted in seeing God work in incredible ways. We recognize that prayer is more than meetings; it is a posture of each heart as we instructed in God’s Word to “pray without ceasing”. (1 Thess. 5:17) Therefore, New Heart encourages an attitude of reliance and dependence on God through prayer.
